Celebrating the artists, farmers and authors of Western North Carolina since 2005

The market on oak is closing

SPRUCE PINE, NC, March 1, 2024, Store closing announcement at The Market on Oak, located at 262 Oak Avenue.  The Market on Oak is a non-profit retail store managed by The Mitchell County Development Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating jobs and strengthening the educational system while promoting tourism in Mitchell County.

The Market on Oak is a vibrant lifestyle destination where over 250 North Carolina craft people, farmers, musicians, and authors from 25 Western North Carolina counties sell and share their work. The shop speaks to the unique cultural values and way of life in the western North Carolina mountains. The store originally began as the Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree in 2003 when author Gloria Houston gave the rights to her book “The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree” to the town of Spruce Pine. Eventually, the store transitioned to The Market on Oak and has supported many local artists while giving locals and tourists a unique place to shop.  Over the years this project has also provided annual scholarships to local high school students to further their education.

The Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce has been located inside the Mitchell County Development Foundation’s building for many years. The Chamber has decided to relocate their offices to a more accessible location at the Mitchell County Visitor Center. This will help The Chamber access the 70,000+ visitors that come into the county from the Blue Ridge Parkway and be able to better support the businesses in Mitchell County. Due to the chamber relocation, the Mitchell County Development Foundation has decided to change directions and close the store.

Starting March 1, 2024, some products will be discounted up to 10%. As per store policy, all purchases made are final. Returns will not be accepted. If you have any gift certificates, please redeem them before March 30, 2024.

"The store will be deeply missed and leave a large hole in our community. This will be the last opportunity to buy many of these unique products from the various creative individuals in our area. We encourage shoppers to visit The Market on Oak in March during our store hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm before merchandise sells out." said Mandi Polly, Executive Director, Mitchell County Development Foundation.
